Observational Studies of Cataclysmic Variable Evolution: of Samples, Biases and Surprises

چکیده
I present brief status reports on three large observational projects that are designed to test our current understanding of the evolution of cataclysmic variables (CVs): The spectroscopic selection of new CVs in the Hamburg Quasar Survey, the search for pre-CVs based on Sloan colours and UK Schmidt/6dF multiobject spectroscopy, and the identification of CVs that descended from supersoft X-ray binaries using a HST/STIS far-ultraviolet spectroscopic survey.

Observational Population Studies of Cataclysmic Variables - the Golden Era of Surveys
We review the properties of the currently known CV population from an accountants point of view. In particular, it is examined to what extent different selection mechanisms (variability, X-ray emission, colours, spec-troscopic properties) affect the observed CV orbital period distribution. Large-scale surveys provide homogeneously selected CV samples, for which observational biases can in princ...
متن کاملOn the use of CO/CO as a test of common-envelope evolution
We present K-band echelle spectra of the cataclysmic variable SS Cyg and the pre-cataclysmic variable V471 Tau in order to measure the strengths of the CO and CO bands at 2.3525 and 2.3448 μm, respectively, and so perform the observational test of the common-envelope model of close binary star evolution proposed by Sarna et al. (1995). Although we find evidence of an absorption feature coincide...
متن کاملMerging two variables (observational learning and self-talk), is not preference one variable evermore
Observing a model let learners to make a plan of action that can be used for learning motor skills. Moreover, self-talk is a conversation that performers use it either apparently or secretly in order to think about their performance and reinforce it. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of observational learning, self-talk and combination of both on boy’s perform...
متن کاملHard X-ray properties of magnetic cataclysmic variables
Hard X-ray surveys have proven remarkably efficient in detecting intermediate polars and asynchronous polars, two of the rarest type of cataclysmic variable (CV). Here we present a global study of hard X-ray selected intermediate polars and asynchronous polars, focusing particularly on the link between hard X-ray properties and spin/orbital periods. To this end, we first construct a new sample ...
متن کاملThe Winds of Cataclysmic Variables
We present an observational and theoretical review of the winds of cataclysmic variables (CVs). Specifically, we consider the related problems of the geometry, ionization state, and mass-loss rate of the winds of CVs. We present evidence of wind variability and discuss the results of studies of eclipsing CVs. Finally, we consider the properties of accretion disk wind and magnetic wind models. S...
